IBM Hursley Fly Fishing Club - Fly Tying Nov 2006 Patterns

The following flies were tied during a fly tying session held in November 2006. (Back to Fly Tying page)

Treacle Parkin


Zug Bug


Hook: Size 10-12 Kamasan B170
Thread: Black 6/0 or 8/0
Body: 1-2 strands of Peacock Herl
Hackle: Furnace or brown cock hackle
Tag: Antron wool in Red or Orange

  1. Starting just behind the eye catch in the thread and attach the tag.
  2. Keeping the tag on top of the hook take the thread in touching turns to opposite the barb. Leave the tag hanging over the bend.
  3. Attach 2-3 peacock herls and wind the thread to the eye.
  4. Wrap the herl to 2 mm from the eye to form the body.
  5. Secure the herl.
  6. Attach and wind on the hackle.
  7. Secure the hackle trim and whip finish the head.
  8. Varnish if required.
  9. Trim the tag about 5mm in length.


Sawyers Killer Bug


Sawyers killer Bug


Hook: Size 10-12 Kamasan B175
Thread: None, tied using Wire
Body: 477 Killer Bug Yarn or Sub

  1. Starting at the barb end wind on the wire in tight turns.
  2. Once at the eye return to the barb forming a second row of wire.
  3. Snap off the small tag end leaving just one end of the wire hanging.
  4. At the eye end of the hook attach the wool in the same manner you would attach the thread.
  5. Trim the butt of the wool and form a body. Several layers maybe required.
  6. At the barb end of the hook secure the wool by using several wraps of the wire.
  7. Snap off the wire.
  8. Optionally lightly varnish the wire end to secure further.

Hook: Size 10-12 Kamasan B175
Head: Gold Bead
Thread: Black 6/0 or 8/0
Rib: Gold Wire
Body: 2-3 strands of Peacock Herl
Hackle: Furnace or brown cock hackle
Tag: Antron wool in any colour Lime Green, Red or Orange

  1. Add the bead to the hook.
  2. Starting just behind the bead catch in the thread and attach the tag.
  3. Keeping the tag on top of the hook take the thread in touching turns to opposite the barb. Leave the tag hanging over the bend.
  4. Attach 2-3 peacock herls and the gold rib.
  5. Wind the thread to the eye.
  6. Wrap the herl to just behind the bead to form the body & secure with thread and trim.
  7. Bring the rib over the herl winding in opposite direction and secure with thread and trim.
  8. Secure & wind the hackle. Trim and whip finish.
  9. Apply varnish to the whip finish.
  10. Trim the tag about 5mm in length.
