IBM Hursley Fly Fishing Club - Fly Tying Dec 2006 Patterns
The following flies were tied during a fly tying session held in December 2006. (Back to Fly Tying page)
Zug Bug
Hook: Size 10-12 Kamasan B175
Thread: Black 6/0 or 8/0
Tail: 3-4 Peacock Swords
Rib: Fine silver oval tinsel
Body: 2-3 strands of Peacock Herl
Beard Hackle: Furnace or brown cock hackle
Wing Case: Mallard over brown cock hackle
- Weight the fly if required and secure the lead using glue or thread.
- Attach the thread and run to the point above the barb in touching turns.
- Secure 3-4 Peacock Swords as a tail.
- Catch in the silver rib, and then add 2-3 peacock herls for the body.
- Return the thread to just before the hook eye.
- Wind the body, then the rib and secure at the hook eye.
- Add a bunch of brown cock hackle fibres as the throat hackle.
- Add a Wing Case using mallard fibres.
- Build the head, whip finish and varnish.
Cats Whiskers
Hook: Size 10-12 Kamasan B175
Eyes: Bead Chain
Thread: White 6/0 or 8/0
Tail: White Marabou
Body: Fluo Green Chenille
Wing: White Marabou + Pearl Krystal flash
- Invert the hook in the vice and secure the bead chain eyes using thread and glue.
- Return the hook to the normal positive and then run the thread in touching turns down to the point opposite the barb.
- Prepare a bunch of marabou and add using pinch and loop as a tail. Optionally add some flash material to the tail.
- Stripe the chenille to review the core and secure at the rear of the fly under the hook.
- Run the thread to just behind the hook eyes.
- Wrap the chenille in tight turns up the fly to just behind the bead eyes.
- Secure the chenille and cut off the waste.
- Move the thread in front of the bead eyes.
- Add another bunch of marabou and optionally flash material as a wing.
- Whip finish and varnish the fly.
Orange Nomad
Hook: Size 10-12 Kamasan B175
Head: Gold Bead & Floss cone nose
Thread: Orange or light colour 6/0 or 8/0
Tail: Orange marabou
Body: Orange Fritz
- Add the bead to the hook.
- Attach the thread to the hook behind the bead and 1/3 of the way towards to bend.
- Using Pinch & Loop attach the tail. Optionally also add flash material to the tail.
- Stripe the Fritz to reveal the core and secure underneath the hook.
- Wrap the fritz in touching turns to 2/3 up the hook and secure.
- Whip finish and remove the thread.
- Push the bead up against the fritz.
- Take a length of floss about 20 Inches at least and build the nose in a cone shape. This should force the bead securely against the fritz.
- Whip finish the floss or secure using multiple half hitches.
- Varnish head.
